Mont-Saint-Eloi Abbey

It was in the Ecoivres woods that the tomb of Saint Vindicien, buried in the 7th century, was found. This disciple of Saint Eloi, evangelizer of the territory, was the bishop of Cambrai and Arras. To preserve its miraculous relics, a first monastery was built on the mountain, then expanded to become a huge abbey in the 11th century, whose influence extended throughout the Pays d'Artois. Sold as national property during the Revolution, the abbey was transformed into a stone quarry and literally pillaged in the 19th century. The towers once reached 53 meters in height! A strategic observation post during the First World War, they were shelled by German artillery fire, which reduced it by one floor. The village was occupied by Allied troops to prepare for the assaults on Lorette and Vimy in 1915 and to ensure the defense of the town of Arras in 1940. At the foot of the village, the Berthonval farm served as a rear base.
