Koriyama Castle is located in Yamato-Koriyama, southwest of the city of Nara in Japan. Enhanced by the flowering of 800 cherry trees in early spring, its historic ruins offer a high panorama of the region and its surrounding mountains.
Built in 1580 by Tsutsui Junkei (1549 - 1584), a local daimyo in the service of Oda Nobunaga, Koriyama Castle dominated the Yamato province at the time. A few years later it became the residence of Toyotomi Hidenaga (1540 - 1591), the younger brother of Toyotomi Hideyoshi, who gave it its maximum size; the keep is then protected by 3 concentric moats.
Abandoned following the Battle of Sekigahara in 1600, the Koriyama-jo site returned in 1615 to Mizuno Katsunari (1564 - 1651) who began its rehabilitation. The Matsudaira, Honda then Yanagisawa clans then succeeded one another at the head of the domain until the Meiji Restoration (1868 - 1889) and the fall of the Tokugawa regime, where the wooden buildings were completely burned.
