Indian is one of the oldest motorcycle brands, with the first model, the Indian Single, launched in 1901 by the American company Hendee Manufacturing Company (HMC) of Springfield, Massachusetts. HMC, the number one motorcycle manufacturer until World War I, was one of only two American manufacturers to survive the Great Depression of the early 1930s. The company was renamed the Indian Motocycle Company (Indian) in 1923.
