Frank Chamber meets, during his wanderings, Nick Smith who runs a roadside café. When he sees Cora, Nick's very pretty wife, he accepts the job offered to him. He seduces Cora, they become lovers and decide to run away. But Cora is loath to leave the security that the café gives her. She manages to convince Frank to get rid of the troublesome husband.
