Shibuya Crossing - Tokyo
- Description
- Print media
Shibuya Crossing is an intersection located in the Shibuya district of Tokyo, Japan, known for its zebra crossings, one of which runs diagonally through the center of the intersection.
The Shibuya Crossing is one of the busiest pedestrian intersections in the world and perhaps the most iconic symbol of the city of Tokyo worldwide.
Due to its huge advertising screens and heavy pedestrian traffic, the Shibuya intersection is often compared to the intersection of Times Square in New York and Piccadilly Circus in London. It is commonly considered a representative element of Tokyo's ultra-modern image.
The intersection's history dates back to the construction of Shibuya Station over 100 years ago, in 1885. Initially serving as a stop on the Shinagawa Subway Line, now called the JR Yamanote Line, the station has since been expanded to serve more than 8 different subway lines in Tokyo.
