In Los Angeles, in 1948, real estate developer Jake Berman enlists the services of private detective Jake Gittes to determine the fidelity of his wife Kitty. The two men hatch a plan and catch Kitty in the act of adultery, but Gittes did not expect Berman to murder his wife's lover in front of his eyes.
