Located in the first foothills of the Balkan massif on the border with Serbia in the north of Bulgaria, Belogradchik attracts hundreds of visitors who come to see its strange rock formations, a sort of mini Bulgarian Grand Canyon which stands out on the horizon in its shades ranging from yellow to red. The fortress is the city's other major attraction, an impressive construction with walls two meters thick and sometimes up to twelve meters high which is surprisingly well preserved. It was initially a Roman fort rebuilt several times.
