Dyrhólaey is an ancient island of volcanic origin. Dyrhólaey is a protected nature reserve. It is a paradise for birds , especially puffins, which come to nest there in May and June. From the top of the cliffs there is an extensive view of the black sand beaches stretching west towards Selfoss and east of the black lava needles of Reynisdrangar near Vik.
The lighthouse has been on the Dyrhólaey peninsula since 1910 and was converted into a hotel in 2016.
